Inspiration and Confidence: What’s Your Take?

It’s a double word day here in the Kingdom of … Inspiration and Confidence. Just kidding … I think … maybe? So I’ve been chewing on inspiration for a day, confidence for an hour.

“Confidence, like art, never comes from having all the answers; it comes from being open to all the questions.” (Earl Gray)

I believe confidence is inspired. By successes and failures, winning and losing, searching and finding. There are people I find inspiring just because they are so comfortable in their own skin. They exude confidence, whether it’s real or not. The exuders who came to mind yesterday were Nora Ephron and Bette Midler. Two very smart, very funny women. Today my inspiration could be the captain of a pirate ship or the man who picks up my trash. We’ll see.

Maybe Jimmy Buffett sums up this whole life thing with a few lines from his song, Cowboy in the Jungle:

“We got to roll with the punches, play all of our hunches, make the best of whatever comes your way. Forget the blind ambition, learn to trust your intuition — plowing straight ahead, come what may.”

I like that. And I’m not a Parrothead nor do I own any Buffet music. But he’s a smart guy when it comes to writing about life. Of which inspiration and confidence play enormous roles.

What inspires you? How do you define confidence?

With those big questions hanging in the air, I’ll take my leave for the moment. Am inspired to eat chocolate and confident I will find some in an old purse or pocket or something.

Later.

*Here’s a snap of my current inspiration:

yep, they are mine

  1. Love the way you pulled it all together in the last sentence. Nicely done, Izzie! Am confident I’ll feel inspired for the rest of the evening, as I too know where to find some chocolate!

    • Haha … just talked to my friend, Miss E. She went to Paris before the holidays and brought home a suitcase full of chocolate. She said she brought home to give as gifts but ate all of it. Whoops!

  2. Interesting post, Iz. I think inspiration can come from many places — a song, a scent, a memory, something I read or hear or learn. As for confidence, that for me is a certain self-assurance, a sense that you can handle most any situation be it personal or professional, a feeling that you look good (or at least, good for you), the knowledge that all isn’t lost even if you screw up royally! I love the look of your candles — wish my laptop had the ability to let me sniff them! In my mind, I’m thinking peppermint, though they just as easily could be jasmine or honeysuckle or white rose or….

    • Hey Debbie! I’m with you on inspiration coming from any and everywhere – just have to be open to it. Thank you for the candle compliment – I stage the photos and my youngest snaps them. Your guess is fairly close; Pure Magic is my latest very favorite scent … sheer florals (jasmine) with mossy undertones makes for an incredibly sophisticated yet subtle fragrance, like wrapping yourself in cashmere. (Do I sound like a copywriter or what?) But it’s true. Thank you for noticing. 🙂

  3. Alright! How do I order? Seriously!

  4. I’m inspired by that beautiful fabric behind your candles…would love to have a skirt made of that material! Confidence…that’s not so easy!

    Hugs,
    Wendy

    • Wendy, after working for an interior design firm the past two years, I fished all retired fabric samples from trash (elegant dumpster diving). Anywho – I have so much fabric … won’t make a skirt unless you patch pieces together but if you want any, I’d be happy to send some your way :). For now, they are my candle “backdrops”; I used some to make Kanzashi pins as well. 🙂

  5. I’m inspired by creativity, by passion, by vision, and by those who will leave this world a better place than when they arrived. I’m confident when those characteristics (creativity, etc) I’ve just listed determine my own actions.

  6. My confidence is at an all-time low, so I won’t comment.

    • Cin, haven’t a clue what sent your confidence plummeting, but, for what it’s worth, I think you are amazing in every way and you are also VERY POPULAR and I would grant you three wishes if I had magical powers. Alas. Nevermind, I grant you three wishes and whatever will make you feel better. 🙂

  7. You know what is more powerful Izzie? Inspiring it in others. A simple word of encouragement or being perceptive of how someone is feeling can boost a person’s confidence and inspire them to get the hell off the couch and hug a tree 🙂

  8. Timely. I just interviewed someone yesterday, and she talked about her inspirations. Wonderful subject and I am glad you show off your candles, too! 🙂 What flavors are they?

  9. Hey FT, I hope you are blogging from under your bed as I warned you that College Girl is in your territory. Inspirations …. ah …. they come out of nowhere. As for the candles, am working on page which will describe scents. You may leave your house tonight as CG is headed to Sonoma. Just sayin’….
